Shakespeare's Globe

Trustee Recruitment Campaign 2022

Board Appointments

Shakespeare’s Globe’s historic site on London’s Southbank is home to two venues – the Globe Theatre and the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse.

Pre-pandemic, they welcomed over 1.25 million visitors a year from all over the world to take part in workshops and lectures, enjoy guided tours of their two theatres, and attend performances sharing 10% of London’s play-going audience. They have a proud record of financial independence and operated, until the pandemic, without any regular public or Arts Council England subsidy.

Philip helped Shakespeare’s Globe with the search and appointment of a significant number of trustees. He was diligent in his research, responsive to our request for searches that encompass a full range of skills. We were consistently impressed by his positivity, his dedication to the task, and the flows of well-arranged information about each candidate, organised in such a way that it was always easy to navigate and consider the options before us. I have no hesitation to recommend his services and skills in this regard.”

— Margaret Casely-Hayford CBE, Chair

Innovation, diversity, and excellence sit at the very heart of all that they do on and offstage, and they continue to make tough decisions to survive, determined to grasp the opportunity to become ever more progressive, relevant, and ambitious than before; in 2022 actively seeking to attract people who can help sharpen their thinking and bring new and diverse voices and experience as they plan for the Globe’s recovery and future.

They were also clear that they do this with vision and confidence and appoint individuals with experience gained in theatre production, the creative industries, finance, digital (new technology, filmmaking & distribution), marketing and communications, delivering major capital projects, commercial, risk, and audit, and change leadership.

Supported by Philip Nelson of the Hiring Department, this wideranging open recruitment campaign attracted an impressively large number of high-calibre applicants from all walks of life, and resulted in the appointment of 8 individuals bringing diverse skills, thinking, and experience, ready to plan for a strong and successful future.

It also resulted in the identification of three further individuals who are expected to be appointed to the Board in 2023 and new relationships being forged with Ogilvy, the New York based Global and British advertising, marketing, and public relations agency and Southwark College.

Change Starts Here.

It’s far too easy just talking about the challenges we face in attracting leadership talent.
