Why Leadership Quotient (LQ) is becoming essential in executive search.
Experience and qualifications alone do not make great leaders.
For too long, senior leadership recruitment has focused predominantly on experience, qualifications and professional achievements. While these remain important, they tell us surprisingly little about an individual’s ability to inspire others, navigate uncertainty, build trust and lead an organisation successfully into the future.
Increasingly, executive search must look beyond what a candidate has achieved to understand how they lead, why people follow them and the impact their leadership has on others.
This is where Leadership Quotient (LQ) becomes particularly important.
What is Leadership Quotient?
Leadership Quotient is a way of considering the qualities, behaviours and judgement that make someone an effective leader. Unlike IQ, which measures aspects of cognitive ability, or Emotional Intelligence (EQ), which concerns understanding and managing emotions, LQ brings together the broader capabilities required to lead people and organisations effectively.
These include integrity, empathy, adaptability, resilience, strategic judgement, self-awareness and the ability to inspire confidence.
LQ is not a single universally standardised measure. Rather, it provides a valuable framework for evaluating leadership potential beyond conventional professional credentials.
Why LQ Matters More Than Ever
Organisations today operate in increasingly complex and unpredictable environments. Financial pressures, technological transformation, changing workforce expectations and growing demands for accountability require leaders who can do considerably more than manage operational performance.
They must bring people with them.
This is particularly important within charities and non-profit organisations, where leadership is about more than financial sustainability or organisational growth. It involves balancing purpose, values, governance, stakeholder expectations and the needs of the communities an organisation exists to serve.
A technically accomplished CEO who cannot build relationships, earn trust or create a positive organisational culture may ultimately prove less effective than someone whose leadership qualities enable others to flourish.
The most successful leaders do not simply deliver results. They create the conditions in which others can succeed.

LQ helps organisations identify individuals with the integrity, empathy, resilience and judgement to inspire others and drive meaningful change.
Putting LQ at the Heart of Executive Search
At The Hiring Dept, I believe assessing leadership qualities should be central to every senior appointment.
That means moving beyond traditional competency-based interviews and examining how candidates have responded to difficult decisions, managed conflict, demonstrated humility, supported colleagues and led through periods of uncertainty.
It also means exploring how they balance ambition with compassion, accountability with empowerment, and strategic direction with organisational values.
Structured interviews, evidence-based assessments and carefully considered references can help reveal these qualities.
Importantly, LQ should never become a subjective judgement about personality or whether someone simply ‘fits in’. Assessment must remain rigorous, transparent and grounded in the actual leadership requirements of the role.
Recruiting for the Future
The consequences of appointing the wrong senior leader can be profound: damaged morale, declining performance, lost confidence and, potentially, lasting reputational harm.
Conversely, appointing someone with strong leadership qualities can transform an organisation’s culture, strengthen its resilience and unlock the potential of its people.
Executive search therefore has a responsibility to identify not simply the most accomplished candidate, but the individual best equipped to lead.
Experience tells us what someone has done. Leadership Quotient helps us understand what they might enable others to achieve.
And increasingly, that distinction may determine whether a senior appointment merely fills a vacancy or genuinely transforms an organisation.
